I made this image on a very dim moonless night. At the time of exposure a large unidentifiable animal was snorting at me through the dark and seemed to be warning me off. Spooked and nervous, I continued to make my compositions. Some exposures were two minutes long which feels like an eternity when you think a wild animal is stalking you. The creature easily snorted at me a dozen times. I could not see into the dark prairie surrounding me and never discerned a visual clue. I'm certain it was not livestock as the paddock was not properly gated. I could not utilize a flashlight as it would have ruined my camera exposure. Prepared to use my tripod as a defensive weapon, I managed to complete the photograph and live to tell the story! The Bichet School is all that remains of a French speaking settlement once located in the Flint Hills of Kansas. This tiny school house, built in 1896, served the community until 1946 when it closed due to low enrollment. The final class held only two students.
